Commodus. 177-192 AD. Æ As 25mm, 9.16 g. Struck 185 AD. Laureate head right / Legend in five lines. RIC III 459b. Near Very Fine, dark green patina.

Commodus, son of Marcus Aurelius, marked the transition from Rome’s golden age to growing instability. His reign was increasingly autocratic, and he styled himself as Hercules Romanus, a theme found prominently on his coinage. Commodus’ coins often feature mythological imagery and deities like Hercules, Roma, and Providentia, making them both distinctive and historically significant.
